“Why I can’t skip my 20 minutes of reading tonight?” The use of the pronoun “I” speaks to the tutees at the program and their agency. It’s directed identification with reading and the personal importance/responsibility with one’s literacy, and how the efforts and time would affect standardized test scores, based on research. The final citation at the end asks about literacy and schooling success–and even larger, life success. The message: read every night to improve your scores, to improve your life.
